It’s made with water instead of milk, making it suitable for those who are lactose intolerant or allergic to milk. The Bread also has a slightly dry texture and can be eaten as is or toasted. It is commonly used for sandwiches and light meals.

The Bread should be eaten fresh, as it tends to dry out quickly. It is an ideal bread to make on busy days as it can be made in bulk and stored in airtight containers.

How To Make Batard Bread Recipe?

Necessary Ingredients

  • Water 1/4 cup
  • Bread Flour 1 cup
  • Sugar 3 tbsp.
  • Salt 2 tsp
  • Egg 1
  • Butter 1 tbsp.
  • Instant Yeast 1 tsp
  • Baking Powder 1/4 tsp
  • White Wine 1/4 tsp

Instruments and Utensils

  • Refrigerator
  • Bowl
  • Mixing Spatula
  • Parchment Paper
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Frying Pan
  • Knife

Preparation Method

Step 1.

Add the water, sugar, and salt to a mixing bowl. Mix well to dissolve. Set aside for about 10 minutes so it can bloom.

Step 2.

Add the yeast, egg & butter to the flour and mix well. Add in all the other ingredients (except for the dough) and knead together well until a soft dough is formed.

Step 3.

Place the dough in a bowl dusted with flour and covered with plastic wrap or foil. Please keep it in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours.

Step 4.

After 8 hours, remove the dough from the refrigerator and take out a small portion of the dough to make sure everything is still well mixed. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes, then divide it into 4-6 balls.

Step 5.

Wrap each ball in plastic wrap and keep them in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them. You will use one ball of dough per loaf or 5-6 balls altogether.

Step 6.

Take one dough ball and roll it into a 1/2-inch thick slab. Be sure to roll it to the edges of the bowl so that you have a tight cylinder. If you don’t roll it out well, your Bread will not be as uniform in size and shape as you want it.

Step 7.

Next, carefully place the rolled-out dough onto parchment paper to help keep it from sticking to your hands. Then cover it with another piece of parchment paper and roll it out to a 1/2 inch thick rectangle.

Step 8.

Once the dough has been rolled out, you can cut the dough into squares or triangles. Place them on a piece of parchment paper so they don’t stick together. Cover it with another parchment and keep it in your refrigerator while you make the rest of the pieces.

Step 9.

Toast the Baard Bread in the oven by placing each piece on a baking sheet with the edges lined up and covering them with parchment paper.

Step 10.

Place the baking sheet in your oven and allow it to bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Rotate the baking tray halfway through so all sides are evenly baked.

Step 11.

Remove the tray from the oven and place the already toasted Bread in a paper bag for about 30 minutes to allow the crust to get softer. Serve with your favorite spread!
